Everything FAFSA from Education Quest:
Federal Student Aid (FSA) has announced that the processing of FAFSAs will be delayed until mid-March. This impacts financial aid offers and pressures students to make college decisions quickly.
Impact of Disrupted FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS)
The delayed FAFSA disrupts the usual FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS) process. Typically, students receive confirmation shortly after submission, but now FAFSAs are labeled "in review" until mid-March, preventing corrections or adding colleges to the form. Please note:
· Families can only make changes to the FAFSA once they receive an email confirming the FAFSA was processed. They can then see their FAFSA Submission Summary.
· Colleges will not receive Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) until March so that financial aid offers will be delayed until April or May.
· The good news is the tables used in the FAFSA calculations are being updated, increasing the number of students receiving Pell Grants and the amount they receive.
Advice for Those Applying for Need-Based Scholarships
Advise students to keep the following correspondence as it will be all they have available to prove financial need until their FSS is ready:
· PDF of the FAFSA confirmation page. View a sample.
· PDF of the confirmation email (Subject: We’ve Received Your FAFSA Form). View a sample.
· The documents must include their first and last name and the Student Aid Index (SAI).
Finally, please encourage students to contact scholarship providers for guidance on how to proceed with their applications.
Impact on Financial Aid Offers and Decision Deadlines
Colleges rely on FAFSA results to determine financial aid eligibility. With delays, colleges may struggle to provide timely aid offers, leaving students with limited time to assess options before the May 1 college selection deadline.
